Jordan's Class 9/3/15

Yesterday in Jordan's class we first painted our own hands including getting the colours right, which I found particularly difficult as the colour of my hands seemed to change all the time so a colour swatch would be dated after about 5 minutes.
The second exercise was to recreate a still life out of a collection of photos which was very interesting, as there was a great emphasis on tonal values and shadows.

Animation: Taste

The taste I chose for this exercise is nutella and the video describes the struggle of getting nutella off the spoon and how nice it tastes once you can eat it!

Audition Exercise

I kept forgetting to make screenshots of me working with audition, so here is one showing that I have been paying attention in Matt's lessons! It's a multitrack file with 3 different noises that play at the same time (which have already been altered individually in the wave form) and by dropping down "read" and selecting volumes in envelopes, it allowed me to alter the volume of the specific sound while the other two were unaffected.

Illustrator Exercise

For Simon's lesson we have learnt a few of the basic tools for Illustrator which works a lot like Photoshop but is vector based. Simon asked us to take a logo from the internet and outline it with the pen tool, which I have used before so it worked well!

Character Design Last weeks drawings

For last weeks character design lesson we were asked to bring in a picture of our favourite character and draw them in a different style that still keeps the characteristics but either simplifies or looks much more real.
For the next task, we were asked to change the shapes of a character, which does not necessarily mean to change the whole body or head shape as in my case I have added a scruffiness to the character by drawing some fur details that look half dried without taking away the roundness which makes him look a bit older and serious compared to the picture I was drawing him from.

Audition Exercise 5/1

As my headset doesn't work with the Mac's, I was not able to properly follow the exercise on Monday and did it today instead. I think I have changed the sounds beyond recognition, which should help greatly when it comes to alienating my own sounds so they will make a fitting soundscape for the pictures assigned to me. I have used the sounds given to as by Matt; number 9 and 11 which are a coin spinning and a train going past which now sound like an oriental guitar and someone pulling strings, like piano strings.

Adobe Story Exercise

In Simons lesson I learnt how to use Adobe Story which helps a lot with Screenwriting as it formats everything into a drama style text. In this exercise I have adjusted a part of the book "The Illustrated Man" to a script.

Colour Comps - The What If Metropolis

2 and 3 are new, I tried to work with the concept of 4 but differently, plus I think I'm getting better at making visible brush strokes instead of making it one single coloured plane.

Animation homework: Ping Pong Ball

pingpong 001 02 (Converted) from Mailin Berg on Vimeo.

Practice in timing, it has gone wrong a little as the ball doesn't behave normally towards the end but I can only try and learn from it! Was fun to create though plus I'm slowly getting better at Dragon (with Vlad's help :D).

Maya Old Alley Lamp Post

Today in Maya I have worked on the lamp post for the old alley scene, it was a very useful exercise to get a grip of the extrude and split polygon tools while working with image planes.

Exterior low angle shot

My exterior low angle shot is getting there, I know the perspective in a few places is a bit off but quickly learning it is not as easy as it sounds :p I like the colours, they feel cosy and inviting but it looks more like a comic book at the moment, definitely needs improvement! Will work on this again this afternoon.

Saturation, burn and dodge tool on exterior establishing shot

Does the lighting look alright? Or is the background too shiny? I reckon the really light bit is where the sun shines through a bit, or at least where daylight seeps in.
I am very happy about the progress I made with the burn and dodge tool, at first it didn't work until I clicked the right layer, now I'm really happy with both tools! I also played around with the colours:

Maya

My pencil has a moustache! :o excited
The colours are not the ones we will be adding as textures in a later tutorial but I thought I'd play around a little and have some fun.

Life Drawing Homework

I think we were supposed to draw from a photo so that we can tell the difference between big life drawing and small sketchbook drawing. I also didn't work with charcoal because of my new beige carpet... so pencil it is! My bigger drawings from the last lesson worked much better with perspective, on this one I can just see so many places where it's just off. This is why I didn't add the strings because they can't go into the same places as they are on the photo! But altogether I think it looks much better than I would have expected and it was fun to draw.

pictures from last weeks life drawing session, not mine!

Everyone elses beautiful work and Max's great photos of the structure! I started on drawing one of them from my phone but the screen is very small (and switches off all the time) so I gave up about half way through but will continue now that they are all on my pc! If you have any problems saving your picture from my blog give me a shout and your email address and I will send them over :)

Life Drawing lesson: my pictures

These are my life drawing pictures from last Wednesday, it was very exciting as I have never drawn anything like it before! I think using charcoal instead of pencil really helped a lot as well as drawing really big scale, I just haven't figured out how to use the putty rubber better yet. But in the next lesson I might sit myself right next to Cat, she seems to know what she is doing :p

Colour palette for Argia (first try)

These are the different colours I will be using for my city, on the left side is more the colours of the walls and the clothes and on the right it's plants and water. I am trying to use as many autumn colours as possible, but the green of the plants is very light because they have been under the earth for so long. The water comes in 3 shades because of the difference in colour when it comes to depth, as there is quite a deep lake in the middle of the city I will try and distinguish between very shallow, normal and deep water.
All the colours might change if I don't find them suitable, but it's a start!

Thumbnails for Anastasia, Argia, Despina, Dominia and Ersillia!

These are my hand drawn thumbnails for the cities Anastasia, Argia, Despina, Dominia and Ersillia, I still have the last 4 left to draw and will do that when I published these! All of them are just quick ideas and things that pop into my mind when I read the description and I will also work hard on my perspective. It needs lots of improvement. Also, after talking to Jordan last week he pointed out that I should make my sketches widescreen instead of square, I am still adjusting to that but getting better!
