Farm Shop other goods and interior research

More reference material for my designs, the sweet section will be a lot smaller than pictured but the way they are wrapped up individually are so suited to how I want them to look. The bread should be versatile and go beyond the typical white loaf you can get in a supermarket and the scones and rolls can also serve as treats as they are generally quite sweet. The meat section might be small but hast the necessities and egg cartons all look similar. I tried to find pictures with many jars, pickles and jams which looks a bit crowded at the moment, but there can only be so and so much local honey. The wicker baskets are for storing fruits, vegetables and bread in and wooden beams seem a suitable aesthetic as it adds detail to an otherwise boring room.

Farm Shop Fruits and Vegetables Research

Having listed all the fruits and vegetables I could find in the photos I took in the farm shops I tried to find close ups to get a better look at the produce so that I could base my designs on them. It's grouped by seasonal (British) fruits around June, exotic fruits, and vegetables (I know that tomato's are fruits really but they don't fit in). 

I looked at the apple first as I hoped that there would be a few cute apple toys out there - turns out a lot of apple toys have worms in them which would probably gross out the children trying to learn about whole foods so I tried to stay away from them! The toys were instantly recognisable as apples though (despite being rounder and squishier) so I will strive for that in my designs.








There seem to be 5 types of berries in season now (where did the redcurrants and blackcurrants go?) and I tried to go for images that pop with colour and make me look forward to cooking with them or eating them as a snack (guess who brought strawberries and blueberries in today? Yumm!) They all look very attractive and my next step will be to look at containers like wooden boxes and wicker baskets to keep them in so that I can start designing them as a whole design rather than two different drawings that decided they might work together (or more likely, not).

Farm Shop Ground Plan

I decided that I wanted to create a ground plan of the building before I start designing details so that I would know what I want to include in the designs. This plan is just s first draft; the outlines are slightly leaned on the Broadditch Farm Shop but is a much smaller shop as it won't have all the decor and not as many condiments and such, and no frozen section either. The till is placed in a strategic place as in the shop assistant is able to see the entry as well as the back of the shop and can therefore easily provide help if a customer needs it. The main focus is on vegetables and fruits so they have both two big spaces with vegetables taking up more room as in the farm shops I visited there was a heavier focus on vegetables rather than fruits. I wanted to include cookbooks as a game that explores whole foods, someone needs to cook the meals, as raw vegetables are not always edible. (They could include really easy recipes that the children can cook with their parents.) The baked goods, meats and condiment sections are all not very big as they are not the main focus, with the sweets and chocolates almost hidden (in plain sight) as hardly and customer will go around the corner and focus on the shelf on the wall instead of the table in front of them (trust me, I work in retail :p) so they will be stumbled upon when looking through the whole shop but not with a quick sweep, plus the section will look dull compared to the bright colours of the whole foods and therefore less desirable. The windows are big to let in plenty of natural light and let the colours do their thing.


Resit Project - Farm Shop

Alan and Phil have decided that for my resit project, I should expand the idea of the horse app game and add a whole farm to the universe, complete with farm shop which teaches children about the importance of fruits and vegetables over fast food and sweets. Everything should be stylised after the hay field that I created for my major project, as it is abstract but recognisable and has a distinct "toy" quality about it with a plasticky look and vibrant colours.

As homework Alan asked me to research and visit farmer's markets, so I went to two shops in Rochester that mainly sell whole foods with a few condiments and juices and the Broadditch Farm Shop in Southfleet which besides fruits and vegetables also has a small meat and bread section and a few house decor items to complete the "farm look" at home.

Major Project Reflective Statement

 Comparing my minor project to my major project is unfair, but I will do it nonetheless. During the first term in year 3 I felt that every day I tried to work on my project, it moved further away from my grasp but through the course of the major project, I felt that I was able to build that confidence back up again, slowly and day by day, but I did it, so a very big part of me is proud to say that I have indeed a project that I can hand in.

 I am aware that the animation is not perfect, and I have realised that my timing in Maya is too slow, but that I am unable to judge the timing unless the animation is fully rendered and I can play it as a video rather than a playback, so in that regard if I would have done the animating a month ago and rendered it straight away, I would have noticed the flaws. But I would have also spent a lot more on render farms, soooo…. I guess I should have asked a few more people for opinions? But I could not bear to ask people too stressed to think clearly for their opinion, as they clearly needed their energy elsewhere.

 The models and choices of colours are my pride and joy, as they have turned a formerly square and grey project into something, cute, round and colourful and therefore seem to be at the heart of the animation, especially the field scene with its bright and vivid colours continues to excite me every time I look at it.

 This is possibly the hardest I have ever worked on a project, and if I would have been more organised I could have sampled the sounds earlier, as I feel that freesound.org was sadly lacking in choices I really would have liked. The piece of music used on the other hand was a lucky find, as I feel that it has something of the wild west with cowboys and daredevils (which goes hand in hand with kids and ponies) and a country music vibe, but absolutely directed towards children with a lot of fun and energy in the melody and rhythm, so I could not have been happier.

 Overall, I have grown a lot during this project, and I have also used it to reflect of what my choices are after the degree (as Chrissie said, children’s toys are a huge market and I would fit right in with bright colours and cute shapes) and I feel that I know a lot more about myself as a person.

I am happy with the animation I’ve produced, and even though it may have parts that are lacking slightly, I can’t wait to receive some feedback that I can possibly use for the minor project.

Lighting Test - Why are my shadows red?


I tried the point light first but because it's an outside setting the directional light works a lot better but in both cases some shadows are red? Not even all of them :p My shadow colour is navy in the first picture and black in the second, no change in shadow redness!

Alan showed me which lights and shadows to use and I played around a little, but after I thought I was done I realised that the first image looks very grey, sterile almost "like the 8am sun when you first leave the house" (Tumo's words) so I added some yellow into the light (all those tack rooms have lights with a yellow tinge, otherwise you'd be able to see what you're doing!) and then added some white back in, but I think it looks pretty ok now. I really love the shadows!






Edit: I've turned up the intensity because it just seemed too dull and grey still, a little better now.

Major Project change to the floor and voice over


I agree that the stones tiles were probably too big so they're smaller now, but they look the way I wanted them to look! 


This is my inspiration, but I wanted to have longer and narrower tiles with almost little gussets in between where spilled water can run into the drain.

Major Project new script

Tack room, Full of containers, boxes, a shelf, racks, a wheelbarrow leaning against the wall and other utilities, daytime.

NARRATOR

"Welcome back from your lesson, I hope you had fun! Now, before you can go and relax in the sun, you need to tend to your pony and make sure she is happy too. First, put the tack back in the right places." 

              Saddle and bridle appear, they can be dragged around freely but when released in the wrong place an alarm sounds and the jump back to their original position, waiting to be picked up again, right place gives a pleasant 'ping' noise. Carrot reward when both are in place.

"Now, she's hungry so fill up her bucket and hay net, she will thank you for it"

              Scoop has to be found, right feed selected from different containers (colour coded?) or the alarm sounds. Pling sounds for oats added to bucket and hay not straw put into hay net. Carrot reward.

"You need to make sure that there will be food tomorrow, so go out into the field-"

              click the field window that popped up in the interface

"take the wheelbarrow with you"

              click the tack room icon in the interface and pick up the wheelbarrow

"pick all the oats, wheat, straw and hay"

              alarm sounds for picking random flowers, pings for right plants, all fly into wheelbarrow when selected

Maya Wheelbarrow and Tap

 In an effort to improve the model of the wheelbarrow, I made the tyre nice and chunky and reduced the dent inside the body and am quite pleased with how it came out.





Next I decided to model a tap which still has a few niggly bits like getting some parts to look round rather than square is proving to be a challenge, but it already looks so much better. I will need some advice as I want the top part to be able to move freely in order to simulate the tap being turned on/off and am unsure how I can go about that. I will ask Alan for help on Friday :) Next up is more orthograph drawings and an updated storyboard!
