Farm Shop Ground Plan

I decided that I wanted to create a ground plan of the building before I start designing details so that I would know what I want to include in the designs. This plan is just s first draft; the outlines are slightly leaned on the Broadditch Farm Shop but is a much smaller shop as it won't have all the decor and not as many condiments and such, and no frozen section either. The till is placed in a strategic place as in the shop assistant is able to see the entry as well as the back of the shop and can therefore easily provide help if a customer needs it. The main focus is on vegetables and fruits so they have both two big spaces with vegetables taking up more room as in the farm shops I visited there was a heavier focus on vegetables rather than fruits. I wanted to include cookbooks as a game that explores whole foods, someone needs to cook the meals, as raw vegetables are not always edible. (They could include really easy recipes that the children can cook with their parents.) The baked goods, meats and condiment sections are all not very big as they are not the main focus, with the sweets and chocolates almost hidden (in plain sight) as hardly and customer will go around the corner and focus on the shelf on the wall instead of the table in front of them (trust me, I work in retail :p) so they will be stumbled upon when looking through the whole shop but not with a quick sweep, plus the section will look dull compared to the bright colours of the whole foods and therefore less desirable. The windows are big to let in plenty of natural light and let the colours do their thing.

Major Project new script

Tack room, Full of containers, boxes, a shelf, racks, a wheelbarrow leaning against the wall and other utilities, daytime.

NARRATOR

"Welcome back from your lesson, I hope you had fun! Now, before you can go and relax in the sun, you need to tend to your pony and make sure she is happy too. First, put the tack back in the right places."

Saddle and bridle appear, they can be dragged around freely but when released in the wrong place an alarm sounds and the jump back to their original position, waiting to be picked up again, right place gives a pleasant 'ping' noise. Carrot reward when both are in place.

"Now, she's hungry so fill up her bucket and hay net, she will thank you for it"

Scoop has to be found, right feed selected from different containers (colour coded?) or the alarm sounds. Pling sounds for oats added to bucket and hay not straw put into hay net. Carrot reward.

"You need to make sure that there will be food tomorrow, so go out into the field-"

click the field window that popped up in the interface

"take the wheelbarrow with you"

click the tack room icon in the interface and pick up the wheelbarrow

"pick all the oats, wheat, straw and hay"

alarm sounds for picking random flowers, pings for right plants, all fly into wheelbarrow when selected

"and plant new seeds."

four seed bags appear, they need to be emptied into the right row or alarm sounds, ping if done right

"Nicely done. Back to the tack room now, and fill the containers."

              Carrot reward

"Next, connect the hose with the water tap"

three taps to choose from, water, pink cream and black gunk

"make sure to chose the right one!"

pink and black splash against the screen when selected

"and fill up the water buckets, but not too much or you'll spill some and make the floor slippery"

bucket overfills and explodes water over the screen. When all full:

"Well done!"

              Level up

Major Project rough storyboard idea

A rough idea of what I think the animation could look like, bar any design decisions, as I am trying to work out what I will need to design. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

Major project idea developement

After getting locked out of my flat yesterday and winding up at Emma's, I realised that the knowledge testing quiz app was probably not what this project should be in the end, so I tried to come up with a way that lets the user learn about horse care 'first hand' rather than being subjected to questions (which could always be added in again, but should not be the main focus).

So for the game, I imagine that the user could find herself in the tack room after a ride where she has to look after the horses needs. It could be an instructional game where a voice tells her what to do next, for example:

"Welcome back from your hack, it looks like you had fun! But now you need to tend to your horses needs to make sure she'll be happy too. First, put the saddle back on the rack (saddle appears on screen, rack lights up) so that it keeps it's form (when done right, horse snorts, content, and carrot appears in corner) then clean the bridle with water (bridle appears, water bucket lights up) shake it and hang it up. (Rack lights up, snorting and carrots for actions carried out well) Well done!
Now, she's hungry so she would really like some oats and hay, so pick up that scoop (scoop appears, bucket of oats lights up) put it in the feeding bucket (different bucket lights up) and take a hay net, place them by the door. (Carrots and snorts.) You need to make sure that there will be food tomorrow, so go out to the field, pick the ripe oats and hay, (items ready to be picked up light up, wheelbarrow lights up) put them in the wheelbarrow and plant new seeds (seeds appear in pouch on screen, need to be moved over rows of soil, carrots ). (Back in the tack room)Then fill the food containers until full, just like that, have a carrot.
Next, the horses need water so grab that horse and pull it over to the water buckets, take care you don't spill it or the whole stable will become slippery. Nice one! (LEVEL UP on screen, horses whinny happily in the background.)"

So, what I want to create is an animation that simulates a game (app game) about horse care, for little girls that want to learn and play. The design should be round, big and cute with bright colours and a square rather than rectangular approach for objects, items and utensils. There will likely be a voice over that explains, encourages and praises and the individual items could be giving more specific information for those who want to learn extra (for example, one horse needs ca. 60l water a day, etc) and there could be a quiz at the end, voluntarily. Following the narrative rewards carrots along the way which could unlock information about items which in turn unlock the quizzes and make it interactive on more than one level.

Minor Project Script Idea/Draft

Jim Script Idea

Lock unlocks and ‘doors’ open, revealing the word JIM. The letters blur and turn into a window, rain beating against the glass. Voice recording starts playing. Sweet appears in upper left corner, boy walks in with hands stretched towards the sweet. His body morphs into that of an adult but keeps the head of the child, now stretching his arms up to plead for help, then clasps them over his head while head zooms towards camera, there is a thunderstorm visible through the window, child’s lips are opening and closing as if to talk. Head sinks out of the frame and causes a hurricane of rain and leaves with shoes running across the frame, keys dancing along and jackets hurrying. Everything speeds up until the rain drowns out everything else and washes clear (every single item could be on a separate “cardboard” and animated individually, could look really good?).

Dirty dishes and cutlery appear, dancing with each other, huge nose appears from the side, sniffing, paws appearing and turning into a little puppy that plays with the cutlery, man appears from below and picks puppy up, cutlery and dishes vanish and puppy head morphs into baby head while man’s head morphs into boy’s head. Man strokes puppy, whole room flips off the page.

Pots and pans fall from the ceiling onto counter in kitchen, oven slots in from the side, oven mitts put a big box with a chicken painted on the sides into the oven and it all explodes into tiny little pieces covering the screen.

Room with a window has a girl in it now, she’s looking at photo albums of her dad doing activities he used to do but can’t anymore (skiing, mountain climbing, playing sports, leaving for work e.g.) flicking pages slowly, letting every memory settle in. Room falls through the side.

The same girl with sits on the floor with man, he’s trying to put wooden blocks together, first upright which topples over, then lying down which works, girl cheers him on and pats him on the head, his head gets bigger and little viruses jump in and start munching on his brain, his head turns into the child’s head as big chunks of brain disappear into the virus’s mouths.

Minor Project update

After my tutorial with Phil yesterday, we decided that my minor project will be presented in a knitted style, as an animation with a relatable, personal story with the basis of the whole world being 'knitting', or 'knit together'.

The story will be personal, likely about memory loss, amnesia, knitting memories back together, or maybe loss of a family heirloom with a rich history.

I will try and talk to someone who has suffered some sort of memory loss or someone who is close to them is suffering this fate.

I want to create an animation where the viewer can feel the loss as the story unravels, and I have looked into personal blogs that have memory loss stories, most seem very interesting and contain material that I could easily use for this project, but I want to have a voice over of a person speaking freely rather than someone reading someone else's writing (which can be nice too, but maybe not for this project).

So far I have learned a bunch about coping techniques (that might or might not work, mostly not in older people), that in most cases family and friends of the affected person are most disgusted by a person's loss of morals, and that real cases of amnesia are very rare and severely romanticized in films.

If possible, I want to find a story of a person who has slowly regained their memory as I would love to go for the "knitting the world back together" theme, but that is probably just as hopelessly romantic as the films, so ideally something I should stay away from. I will have to think about this.

Minor Project first ideas

For my minor project I intend to create an animated environment or object(s).

My first idea is to create a witch's hut which combines the classic but also modern definitions, for example black and white magic, knowledge of herbs and plants, dipping into paganism and new age witches. I would like to animate it in an app game style, where the player moves around the hut and clicks on the various objects to learn about and interact with them, possibly with mini games as well (for example: brew your own potion) and quizzes.

My next idea was to put the style first and create a world that is entirely knitted, with inspiration from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:
but the characters (if any present) would be more in a stick man style with influence from Shrek's gingerbread man:

But in a more simplistic style like Snow White here:

This time I was not asking what topics I like, but what history my family has, which they have told me about.

The first thing that came to mind was one of the big floods in Hamburg, as my grandad used to have a fuel station for boats in the Harbour in Hamburg, so he was affected first hand by the North Sea flood in 1962 and I thought it might be interesting to have knitted waves crushing into a knitted city, possibly destroying landmarks on the way. The animation could be presented with a "My grandad once told me about..." voice over which dips into the history of the city I was born in but also my own.

The next idea is about my nan's history, as she was deported from Poland into a refugee camp on Fehmarn (a German island in the Baltic sea) at the age of 10 in 1945 and lived there for 5 years with her mother and brother before moving to Hamburg. I've interviewed her once for a school project, so I have a recording of her telling me what the camp looked like, what the general living situation had been like and how they dealt with daily life and not so daily diseases and injuries (my nan had Tuberculosis while living there). I think this could be an interesting animation if it's paired with a crackly voice over in German with subtitles and maybe a time lapse effect with everything moving very fast but then slowing down if something is described in more detail. I would use the same knitted style as described above, but with muted colours or entirely in black and white.

Some other knitted objects I've though about were a motorbike and a Buddhist temple, but I haven't thought about the animation aspect of both of them yet.

One idea was to have the lifelines as threads coming out of the people as they go about their day to day business, they have the yarn behind them intertwining and throughout the day knitting a grand pattern, which vanishes overnight, but it reminded me a lot of one of the invisible cities the first years are working on (collaboration with a first year? :p why not!)

And the last idea was that a person gets up in the morning and absorbs everything they consume, creating the character from toes to head, for example the coffee turns into socks, the apple builds the hem of the trousers, the pages of the newspaper turn into trousers/skirt, the shower water turns into a t-shirt and so on. It would be in a first person perspective with sounds creating a lot of the story, person gets up in the morning, yawns, looks down and sees nothing, grunts maybe, gets up and drinks coffee, looks down and sees socks! Accompanied by a happy sound, eats apple, looks down to find hem, reads the newspaper and watches the trousers climb up the legs and so on.

I love knitting, I've only learned it fairly recently and would like to explore the opportunities it gives me.

Adaptation B Ideas

For my adaptation b project I ordered the book beanstalk - adventures of a jack of all trades a while ago and decided on two characters that would suit the project as I want to design and create a character for animation.

Jack Farris:
- red hair, long enough to hang into eyes
- brown skin
- freckles
- very tall (~2m) slim but toned, narrow shoulders
- barefoot, calloused
- big hands, calloused
- 20
- many scars
- academy uniform: jacket, shirt, trousers, boots (he doesn't wear the boots)
- small sly grin, big and wide smile
- knives in back pockets
- knapsack full of medicines
- green badge around his arm, stating he's studying to be a guide

Sez:
- darkish skin
- short, maybe 5'1, 5'2
- thick coarse black hair with purple streaks
- sharp smile
- sturdy boots
- small cap for coins / to keep her hair tamed
- curvy
- loose pants/ fringed skirt
- strings, ribbons and yarn knots hanging from belt loops and pockets
- plenty of pockets, deep enough to fit envelopes without revealing them
- purse for coins
- looks like she is in her early 20's but is actually late teens
- purple theme clothes (eyelashes?)
- street performer, juggling torches
- illiterate but very intelligent

Alan strongly advised me to decide the style I want to work in to make this project achievable.

Adaptation A Infographic first ideas

Things your pet doesn't tell you:

   - Cat (while scratching the couch): Oh if you are wondering about the smell behind the couch I left a present there for you, you always hide eggs at Easter. I'm disappointed you haven't found it yet...

   - Dog (getting ears pulled by child): Aaaaaand she's at it again, first the airplane, then helicopter...

   - Fish (singing on top of its lungs): Lalalalalaaaaa defyyyying graaaavity - oi why did you turn it off??

   - Rabbit: Fucking carrots again, Fluffy broke up with me last night, I need chocolate and wine not vegetables....

   - Hamster (running its wheel): Have you ever had a look at yourself? If my running would slim you down too you'd look soooo amazing but I don't seem to inspire you at all....

   - Spider: What did you get there? A venus fly trap? Am I not good enough for you anymore??

   - Fox (staring at the TV through the window): She better be voting for that foxhunting ban that was on the news the other night...

Other animals I could use: horse, pig, bat?

The first draft for our social media site design

After Andy's idea, it's called chirper! The image of the girl is not mine and just a replacement for now, the right side looks very empty but after scratching my head several times I could still not think of anything that should be there so I left it free for now. Any improvement ideas are welcome, hope you like the idea so far :p

Narrative tutorial with Alan

After talking to Alan today, he asked us to make some bullet points and line out our idea as a story, so here goes:

First of all, the main character thinks only in social media terms and it's all happening in his head.

- a girl sits at a bus stop
- main character, guy, let's call him Bob, comes along and sits down next to her
- the screen splits, shows his face, her face and a social media site alike to facebook
- it has her fictional profile, titles "pretty girl", camera zooms into details of her which pop up as information on her profile (uni ID, logo on jumper - favourite band? etc)
- he waves in her direction, facebook writes hello in the chat with "pretty girl" that popped up
- on facebook he sends friend request, in rl he half leans over to shake her hand, she is daydreaming and doesn't notice
- he doesn't give up and sends her an emoji which turns into a creepy smile on his face
- not knowing what to say, he types questions and deletes them before sending them over and over again
- all the while the facebook window grows bigger and takes up the girls side
- he finally sends something and looks up proudly only to discover that she left the bus stop
- the facebook window fades and leaves him sitting on his own but a little window pop up at the top "pretty girl has left the conversation"
- his gaze falls onto a little blue bird that sits where she was sitting, bird looks back at him
- credits
- back onto bird, "follow?" button pops up

Character Game Design Project

For the character game design project I was given three random cards:

- Robotics (automaton/programming)
- Disease (outbreak/multiplying)
- Medicine (cure/treatment)

With these three themes I will have to design an environment, characters and a mechanism, the method how to play the game.

I have started by looking up different games and ruling out the ones that won't be translatable into this project, for example abstract strategy games like carom, chess and go would not be suitable as they don't have environments or characters, no narrative and pen & paper RPG like dungeons & dragons or LARP (live action role play) are unsuitable as well as world and play style change drastically depending on how your game master is interpreting the rules and because the characters are often made by the players themselves so the game would not have the restrictions an MMO RPG for example has.

The games that would be suitable for this project include "European type" board games (which are apparently particularly popular in Germany, I always took them for granted) which usually accommodate 2-6 players and last 1-2 hours which makes them perfect for light entertainment, they also focus on keeping all of the players in right till the end and unlike Monopoly, do have a proper and satisfying ending after a certain amount of time.
Arcade games would also be a nice choice as they have an environment, a simple objective and usually a few characters including hero, sidekick, damsel in distress and enemies.
RPG's on consoles and PC, FPS, card games and browser games or phone games (apps) will also be considered.

My ideas so far are:

A first person shooter in which the world is made out of disease, the player is a robot but with human intelligence (and characteristics) who's objective is to shoot medicine at viruses that pop up in front of him. He (or she) works in a small team of 2 or 3 and has to complete one objective to move on to the next level which increases in difficulty.

A board game where the world is made from robotics, it's squeaky clean and sterile but somehow the motor oil got corrupted by disease. The players objective is to roll the dice and make their way around the board collecting treatment which comes in different "colours and forms", several formulas will work but cannot easily be obtained by chance so players have to swap treatments with others and are slowed down or sped up by pick-up-cards.

A strategic PC game has the world made from medicine, robots farm it and collect it in right parts to fight the diseases, an outbreak would mean game over - the player has to plant and harvest the right kind of cure for the specific disease approaching before it's there so overview and organisational skills are of the essence.

Ideas for the Narrative

Yesterday on the open day Kavya, Andy and I met up (Cat could sadly not make it) and we did a brainstorm were we just got a few ideas on paper! Some of them are a bit weaker than others, but I decided to just put all of them on here so we can at least make sure that we've given every idea a chance.

- we started off with an imaginary friend who could also be a dead twin that the character still talks to or even a ghost
- the one I like best is a bout a couple that goes through a divorce but hasn't told their friends yet, so whenever they are at parties they have to pretend to still be best friends but the moment they leave they part ways, drop their face and go to their own homes were they look at pictures of times when they were still happy together and just feel sorry for themselves - quick story board:
- A cat is his owners best friend and cuddles with him, meows, plays, gets food and then vanishes - to the neighbour, where he gets more food but the unsuspecting owner doesn't know and is so happy about having his cat as his best friend
- A pet is a crime fighter behind the owners back, always disappears at night and comes back with bruises and cuts etc and the news wonder who keeps their streets clean at night
- A tiger is a ferocious beast in the show bust best friends with his partner behind the scenes
- something about salt and pepper??
- An elephant and bird have a symbiotic (I think that's the word?) friendship were they help each other out, bird picks nasty insects from the elephants back and is in turn allowed to build his nest on top of him, one day bird flies into trees and elephant wanders off so the bird has to find the elephant with his kids -- maybe a bit too childish?
- a cliff thinks the sea is it's best friend as it's always there for it but doesn't realise that the sea is slowly eating away from the cliff
- 2 socks from different pairs are best friends and always try to be as close as possible to each other  so when the human wears only one out of the two they sabotage  their human - potential for comedy?
- squirrel and tree are best friends - lot's of puns?
- a guy has a breakup with his girlfriend and turns more and more into a slob, his friends hatch plans to get him out of his flat and succeed in the end - morale:you are nothing without your friends?
- 2 really good friends are super competitive when it comes to sports up to the point where it threatens their friendship
- two friends swear at each other and show their affection that way (- see what I mean with weaker than others?)
- the letters of the alphabet make literature or poetry by chasing each other but secretly hat each other as well - this is very abstract but I think if done right it could be an engaging animation
- the (minutes and hours) fingers of a clock want to be together so badly but for obvious reason, can't be. They might try to brake the clock? More of a love story than friendship though

It's a start!

Ideas for my soundscape project

I have written down an idea for each picture so that I can actually tell a story and also work easier with the sounds, because now I know what happens when.

Bubbly, splashing and sharp string noises open this picture, there is a fight between the intruder and the environment which have opposing characteristics. Both struggle, rising and subsiding until the environment finally wins and the sharp string noise disappears completely.

The sound starts at the picture, it's very crackly and hollow and light, enter an additional swirly and more fluid sound as the stringy bits separate themselves from the strawy ones, the stringy bits could be like teenagers that want to explore the world without their rigid and stiff parents and they slip away under their parents dried up old noses, we follow the children until there is no crackling sound left and then they fade out too.

This sound is a slow water sound that is continuously happening, enter glass blown water worm, organic, who swims past looking for his prey for lunch. He has a distinctive swirly sound that splashes the water and he sniffs loudly to find food. He moves quite slow and probably blind, he might live at the bottom of the ocean in the deep sea.
